Doctor Solomon Liao

Presentation: Fundamentals of Palliative Medicine for Chinese Patients

Time: Sunday Morning
Purpose: To increase knowledge of the field of palliative care, and competence in arranging for palliative care for patients and their families.
Objectives:
Summarize referral criteria for hospice and palliative care
Describe how such a referral is made, and how to involve the family and caregivers in decision making
Describe the services provided by hospice staff for the patient and family

Associate Professor of Medicine & Director, Palliative Care Services, UCI School of Medicine

Bio:
Dr Solomon Liao is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Irvine where he is also the Director of Palliative Care Services.  He completed his medical school training at the University of California, Irvine and then proceeded to Northwestern University Memorial Medical Center for his internal medicine residency.  He returned to UCLA for his geriatrics fellowship and is board certified in geriatric medicine and palliative medicine.

Dr Liao’s research focus is elder mistreatment.  His other publications include topics in ethics, medical education, hospice and palliative medicine.   Dr Liao is currently on the board of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the editorial board of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management.  He is also editor of the first and only Hospice and Palliative Medicine board review practice examination and is the American physician editor of the Hospice and Palliative Care Formulary USA.  Dr. Liao has served on the USMLE step 2 writing committee and was co-editor of the palliative review series for the Journal of Palliative Medicine.
