Presentation: Palliative Medicine and Chinese Culture

Time:
Sunday Morning
Purpose: To present Chinese language and cultural materials on pain and palliative medicine, and summarize recent research from East Asia in palliative care.
Objectives:
Examine elements of Chinese culture that affect the perception of palliative care
Review Chinese terms for palliative care and pain assessment
Apply findings in East Asia for Chinese patients

Bio:
Dr Victor Chang received SB/SM in Chemical Engineering from MIT and his MD from New York University School of Medicine. He completed training in Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Good Samaritan Hospital of Maryland. He then completed fellowships in Hematology Oncology, Clinical Pharmacology and Cancer Pain at Weill Cornell University Medical Center.  He is currently an Attending in Hematology Oncology at the VA New Jersey Health Care System, and Associate Professor of Medicine at UMDNJ.  He is active in the VA Palliative Care Research Consortium and the VA Pain Research Group.  He is co-chair of the NCI Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Symptom Management Committee.  He chairs the Research Committee for the Chinese American Medical Society and the Federation of Chinese Medical Societies.  His current research interests include cancer pain, symptom assessment and management, quality of life, and prognosis.
