Presentation: Personalized Medicine for Kidney Disease: Can it Be Done?
Time: Sunday Morning
Purpose: To raise awareness of existing and future issues in managing kidney disease
Objectives:
Review the epidemiology of kidney disease and its impact in Asian and general populations
Review the applications of functional genomics and pharmacogenomics
Describe the needs for new treatment strategies for kidney disease

Bio:
Dr. Hsiao received her PhD from Department of Pathology and Cell Biology, Thomas Jefferson University in 1989 and her MD from Jefferson Medical College in 1995. She completed Internal Medicine training at Allegheny University Hospital in Philadelphia and was Chief Resident in Medicine. In 1999 Dr. Hsiao entered the MGH-Brigham and Women's Nephrology training program. She is currently a faculty member, an Associate Physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. During her tenure at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Hsiao was personally the driving force behind the HuGE Index, which provides gene expression data via the internet. She has written over 20 manuscripts and review articles. One of the articles has been selected as “The 50 most frequently-cited articles in Physiologic Genomics” as year of 2006. Her research areas of interest include mechanisms of vascular calcification, herbal effects on kidney injury.
Dr. Hsiao has been an active member at Harvard community and has received numerous awards for her outstanding clinical work, teaching and mentoring of students at all levels. Recognizing her effective clinical care, she was awarded the 2007 Starfish Award given by the BWH for commitment to excellence in patient care and teamwork. In recognition of her teaching abilities, she received one of the 2003 teaching awards given by the graduating class of Harvard Medical School. Of special note, she is one of the recipients of 2008-2009 Young Excellent Mentoring Award, a new award to be presented as part of the prestigious Clifford Barger Mentor Award ceremony at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Hsiao is the Program Director of “Asian Renal Clinic” at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, This program is the first of its kind in the New England region and is designed to be a renal referral center serving large Asian population in Greater Boston area and around the world. Dr. Hsiao is also the creator of Community Kidney Disease Detection (CKDD) program, CKDD comprises student volunteers from American Pacific Asian Medical School Association (PAMSA)-Harvard Medical School chapters and Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) at Harvard University. She is advisor for both student organizations. Dr. Hsiao has given talks on the topics of renal prevention and led free health screening activities in various Chinese communities as well as a monthly-run station situated in Chinatown.
Dr. Hsiao served as a member of admission committee at Harvard Medical School, the Co-Chair for the “Professional Development Seminar (PDS)” course during the ASN (American Society of Nephrology) week, a Councilor of WIN (Women In Nephrology) and the member of planning program committee of NKF (National Kidney Foundation). Currently, she is a board member of CASN (Chinese American Society of Nephrology) and she also serves as a committee member of PGE Committee (Postgraduate education committee) of ASN.
Dr. Hsiao’s area of expertise covers all aspects of chronic kidney disease (CKD), IgA nephropathy and herbal medicine-induced nephropathy.
