Dr. Alan Cheng

Presentation: Sudden Cardiac Death in the United States: Do Current Guidelines Apply to the Chinese Patient?   
Time: Saturday Morning
Purpose: To update the attendees on the prevalence of sudden death in the united states and determine whether existing guidelines on its management apply to Chinese patients
Objectives:
Describe the prevalence of sudden death and the most common causes of this condition
Review the most effective therapy for preventing sudden death and its limitations
Determine whether Chinese patients are at comparable risk for sudden death as patients of other ethnic extractions

Assistant Professor of Medicine, Cardiac Electrophysiology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine  Director, Pacing and ICD Service, Johns Hopkins Hospital

Bio:
Dr. Alan Cheng graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.S. degree in Biochemistry. He later matriculated to Yale Medical School where he earned his MD degree. He served as an intern and a resident in internal medicine on the Osler Medical Service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He remained at Hopkins for his general cardiology and advanced cardiac electrophysiology training. Currently, he is on staff as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is Director of the Arrhythmia Device Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Cheng is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society, American Heart Association and is recognized as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He actively participates in various committees with both the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society. His clinical interests focus on the management of adult cardiac arrhythmias and performing various procedures such as implantation of cardiac rhythm management devices (pacemakers, defibrillators, resynchronization devices) and catheter-based ablation of complex arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation. Dr. Cheng’s research interests currently focus on sudden death, ICDs and cardiac sarcoidosis. He has coauthored numerous articles on atrial fibrillation, ICDs and cardiac resynchronization devices.
