Doctor Edmond Pi

Presentation: A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Mental Health
Time: Saturday Morning
Purpose: To provide health care professionals with an overview of the impact of ethnicity and culture as well as the practical implication of these bio-psycho-social factors on the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
Objectives:
Identify key cultural characteristics among diverse ethnic groups in the field of mental health.
Recognize the issues in diagnosing and treating mental disorders in Asian populations, with a special focus on the Chinese population.    
Describe how ethnicity and culture affect clinical responses in psychopharmacotherapy.

Bio:

Edmond Hsin-tung Pi, M.D. has outstanding achievements in clinical care, teaching, research, and administration. Dr. Pi is an excellent clinician, he has been selected by his peers to be included in “The Best Doctors in America” (Psychiatry) since 1994 and selected for inclusion in the “America’s Top Doctors” (Psychiatry) since 2001. Dr. Pi has held full professorship in psychiatry since 1988: Professor of Clinical Psychiatry (1988-1998, 2005- ) at the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine, Professor of Psychiatry (Career Academic Series) at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (1998-2003), and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) David Geffen School of Medicine (1999-2005). Dr. Pi is a Visiting Professor of Psychiatry at Tsinghua University, Beijing, Capital Medical University, Beijing and Shantou University, Guangdong, China. Also, he is an Honorary Professor of Psychiatry, Central South University, Hunan, China. Dr. Pi is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine.

Dr. Pi is an accomplished researcher in the field of cross-cultural psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and movement disorders, with more than 150 publications (including journal articles, letters of editors, book chapters, book reviews, abstracts, and other publications) and one book. Dr. Pi has given numerous presentations at various national and international meetings and he has been very active on both the US and the international scenes in the field of mental health including served on scientific committee for different professional organizations.
Dr. Pi has received numerous awards, most recently he was honored as the recipient of the 2009 Asian American (Kun-po Soo) Award of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for his significant contributions toward understanding the impact and import of Asian cultural heritage in areas which have relevance in psychiatry.

Dr. Pi has held substantial administrative positions over the last 30 years. The most significant non-academic position was serving as the Medical Director (1997-1998) of the Department of Mental Health (DMH), State of California. Dr. Pi is currently Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs, Department of Psychiatry at the USC Keck School of Medicine and Director of Psychiatric Consultation and Liaison Service (Psychosomatic Medicine) at LAC+USC Medical Center.

Dr. Pi is a willing and active contributor to the community, his services have included membership on the Board of Directors of the Committee of 100 (1993-1998) and China AIDS Fund, Inc. (2003-present); the President’s Council on Chinese Garden of the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, California; and Member of the Committee of 100 (1991-present).
