Purpose: To review current data on lung cancer in Chinese Americans Describe the differences in the biology of lung cancer between Chinese and North Americans.
Objectives:
Describe how these differences affect the treatment of lung cancer in Chinese patients.
Examine personalized medicine for Chinese patients with lung cancer.

Bio:
Dr. Pao is a physician-scientist with a special interest in thoracic oncology. Dr. Pao’s research focuses on identification of genes involved in the pathogenesis of lung tumors and stratification of tumors into clinically relevant molecular subsets. Using information derived from these experiments, Dr. Pao seeks to improve treatment for patients with non-small cell lung cancer. His research has yielded important insights into mechanisms of lung tumor sensitivity and resistance to inhibitors of the epidermal growth factor receptor.
Dr. Pao received his MD and PhD degrees from Yale University, where he studied the development and function of murine gamma-delta T cells in the laboratory of Dr. Adrian Hayday. Following his clinical training in medical oncology at MSKCC, he received postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Harold Varmus. He ran an independent laboratory in MSKCC’s Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (2005-2009) and was recruited to Vanderbilt in 2009.
Throughout his career, Dr. Pao has authored and co-authored more than 60 research articles and reviews in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Public Library of Science (PLoS),Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Cancer Research. He has served as a journal editor for PLoS Medicine, Cancer Research, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology, is a Senior Editor for Cancer Research, and as a Medical Committee Research Member on Joan’s Legacy: Uniting Against Lung Cancer Foundation. He has received an ASCO Young Investigator Award, the American College of Chest Physicians (AACP) CHEST Foundation and The LUNGevity Foundation Clinical Research Award in Lung Cancer, a Clinical Scientist Development Award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, a V Foundation grant, an SU2C/AACR Innovative Research grant, the Barbara Parisi Lung Cancer Research Grant, and the Hope Now Award from the Joan’s Legacy Foundation. Dr. Pao has served or currently serves as PI on NCI K08 and R01 grants, and a project leader on NCI P01 and U54 grants. He is actively involved in professional associations including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
