CME Credit Requirement

As an IMQ/CMA accredited CME provider, we are required to measure "Changes in Competency/Performance" in all CME activities. All attendees will be asked
to complete the Post-Activity Evaluations online by Monday, June 17, 2019 at 11:59PM
in order to receive CME credit(s).

Program Overview















In reference to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) recent report/(NAMI.org), there are approximately one in five adults experiences some type of mental illness each year, which translated to 43.8 million people or 18.5 percent of the population. One in four young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 have a diagnosable mental illness. More than 25 percent of college students have been diagnosed or treated by a professional for a mental health condition within the past year. Mental health represents an important source of suffering for patients and their families, and an unmet health care need in the Chinese American community. Gaps in utilization of mental health services are well documented for Asian Americans. At the same time, there is increasing awareness of how culture plays a role in shaping the presentation and diagnosis of mental illness in Asian patients, and new information on how to assess and treat Asian patients with these disorders. However, the recognition of mental health problems and their management in the American Chinese community is hindered by stigmatization, language and cultural barriers. These developments highlight important knowledge, competence and practice gaps that should be addressed in an educational activity for health care professionals. Moreover, the responsibility for providing mental health care is falling increasingly to primary care providers. This may reflect both the treatment preferences of many patients and the availability and affordability of health care services CAMASC has conducted an educational needs survey among its physician members and through gap analysis research, identified the following five (5) topics to be addressed:

2. "Mental Health, Substance Use and Drug Addiction"
3. "The Epidemic of Opiate Use and Misuse"
4. "Mental Health Care for College Students"
5. "Prevention and Management of Physician Burnout"

Educational Purpose


 

The purpose of this activity is to narrow the existing practice gaps in treating patient with mental disorder, by addressing culture, ethnic, stigma and new scientific knowledge to improve patient care.  A variety of teaching and evaluation methods have been developed to facilitate learning and professional development.  At the end of the seminar, participants will be able to discuss differential diagnoses, describe possible complications and list preventive measures, implement educational, preventive, and therapeutic interventions, and improve cultural and linguistic competence in communication in their treatment for patient with mental disorder. This activity is expected to result in increased knowledge/competence and better performance in making an appropriate diagnosis, providing effective treatment and referral or follow-up care, with the overall goal of improving patient care for the mentally ill patients.    

Target Audience

This CME activity is designed for family physicians, internists, physician assistants and other clinical providers of adult care, who are also provide health care to or are interested in the health care of the Chinese/Asian American community.

Certificate of Participation for Physician Assistant (PA) American Academy of Physician Assistant (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. PAs may receive a maximum of 5 Category 1 credits for completing this activity. A Certificate of Completion will be issued upon written request. 



Educational Methods


This CME activity will consist of five (5) lectures, presented by distinguished faculty to facilitate the different educational needs of a diverse audience. This CME activity will employ a combination of educational methods, including live didactic lecture, case studies, review of literatures, group discussions and interactive techniques such as a question/answer session, pre/post educational assessment, and a 30-day follow-up post activity survey.  CAMASC has implemented an Audience Response System (ARS) as one of the tools to enhance the learning experience and conduct outcome measurement for this activity. 


   
California Assembly Bill (AB) 1195 This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195 which requires
continuing medical education activities with patient care components to include
curricula in the subjects of cultural and linguistic competency.
